Zakynthos is the third largest Ionian island, located south of Kefalonia and west of the Peloponnese. The island is 410 km2 and the coast is about 123 km long. In Greek mythology, the island is said to be named after Zakynthos, the son of the legendary Arcadian chief Dardanus.
Zakynthos is a tourist destination, with an international airport served by many airlines. The island's pet name is also "To fioro tou Levante" (the flower of the east), given by the Venetians.
Zakynthos is a beautiful green island and famous for the endangered sea turtle Caretta-Caretta, which lays its eggs on the beaches of the island.
